GTA 6 (Grand Theft Auto VI) is the one everyone's been waiting for. Rockstar Games is finally taking us back to Vice City — the fictional Miami from 2002's Grand Theft Auto: Vice City — but completely rebuilt with current-gen tech. The game is set in the state of Leonida, Rockstar's take on Florida, and it's shaping up to be the biggest open-world game ever made.

GTA 6 Release Date & Delays

It's been a long road. GTA 6 was originally slated for late 2025, then got bumped to May 26, 2026, and then delayed again to November 19, 2026. In their official statement, Rockstar said: "We are sorry for adding additional time to what we realize has been a long wait, but these extra months will allow us to finish the game with the level of polish you have come to expect and deserve."

As of April 2026, Take-Two Interactive has confirmed the November date is locked in and marketing kicks off this summer.

GTA 6 Platforms: PS5 & Xbox Series X|S (No PC at Launch)

GTA 6 launches exclusively on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. No PS4, no Xbox One — this is a next-gen only title built from the ground up for current hardware. PC players will have to wait. Based on Rockstar's history (GTA 5 hit PC about 18 months after consoles, RDR2 about a year), a PC release is likely in late 2027 or early 2028. No official date yet though.

Meet Lucia & Jason

For the first time ever in a mainline GTA game, you're playing as a female protagonist. Lucia teams up with her partner Jason in what Rockstar calls a modern Bonnie and Clyde story. Lucia is the first playable female character in GTA history. Their criminal journey takes them through Leonida's neon-lit cities, sun-soaked beaches, and swampy backwaters. From what we've seen in the trailers, these two are going to be iconic.

Vice City & Leonida: The Map

GTA 6 is set across the state of Leonida, with Vice City as the centrepiece. Think Ocean Drive nightlife, beach culture, the Everglades, suburban sprawl, and coastal towns — all rendered in insane detail. Players are speculating the map could be roughly twice the size of GTA 5's, though Rockstar hasn't confirmed exact dimensions. What they have said is it's their most ambitious open world to date, and given what they pulled off with RDR2, that's saying something.

GTA 6 Timeline: How We Got Here

• December 2023 — Trailer 1 drops, breaking YouTube records. Vice City confirmed, Lucia revealed
• January 2025 — Trailer 2 shows off gameplay and the open world of Leonida
• February 2025 — First delay: late 2025 pushed to May 2026
• May 2025 — Release date locked in as May 26, 2026
• November 2025 — Second delay: pushed to November 19, 2026
• February 2026 — Take-Two confirms the date is final. No more delays

Trailers & What's Next

Two trailers so far — the reveal in December 2023 and the gameplay showcase in January 2025. With the game dropping in November 2026, everyone's expecting a massive marketing blitz this summer. A third trailer or full gameplay deep dive feels inevitable. Take-Two has basically confirmed the marketing budget is going to be huge.

What About GTA Online?

GTA Online has been a cash machine for Rockstar since 2013, and the big question is what happens when GTA 6 drops. Rockstar hasn't laid out the full plan yet, but GTA 6 is widely expected to ship with its own online multiplayer component — a next-gen evolution of GTA Online. Whether the current GTA Online keeps running alongside it or gets wound down remains to be seen.

What We Know About Gameplay

Rockstar is keeping things close to the chest, but the trailers show off next-level NPC behaviour, dynamic world events, and what looks like a completely reimagined online multiplayer. Built exclusively for current-gen hardware means no compromises — this is the game that's supposed to push PS5 and Xbox Series X to their limits.
