Two months with a Model 3 Long Range

I ordered a Model 3 Long Range RWD in early May 2026 and collected it at the very end of June. About seven weeks, if you’re trying to work out whether yours lands before some date you care about. Everything below is what the car’s actually done since, not what the configurator promises.

Range. Tesla quotes 466 miles WLTP. I get comfortably over 360 miles to a full charge, about 77% of that. Sounds worse than it is. 360 real miles is still an enormous amount of car, and the range anxiety everyone warned me about hasn’t shown up once. That’s a summer number, though. I’ll update it after a winter.

The cooled seats have been great. They come on the Long Range and I didn’t think much of them when I ordered, but through the summer we’ve just had they’ve been a blessing.

You probably do not need a home charger to start with

Nearly every guide treats a wallbox as something you sort out before the car arrives, at the best part of a thousand pounds installed. Two months in, I still haven’t fitted one. I charge at home on a Tesla Mobile Connector, top up at Superchargers when I’m out, and between them it’s covered everything. One thing to flag: the Mobile Connector isn’t included with the car any more. You buy it separately.

At home it puts back about 60 miles overnight. Call it 420 a week, against a UK average of roughly 140. So even before you count Superchargers, a cable costing a fraction of a wallbox covers about three times what most people actually drive. Unless you’re doing serious mileage, you can take your time over a proper charger instead of rushing one in before delivery.

The referral credit did more work here than you’d think. I used someone else’s code when I ordered, so the car turned up with 650 free Supercharging miles. Those covered the away-from-home charging while I worked out what I actually needed, and between that and cheap overnight electricity, fitting a wallbox never became urgent. It’s a one-off, obviously. But as a head start it’s worth more than the £70–£100 headline suggests, because it buys you time to find out what suits you before spending anything.

Charging at home on Octopus Agile over the summer, running costs have been very good, and noticeably cheaper than the petrol car it replaced. Agile prices move every half hour and occasionally go negative. On the best days I’ve been paid to put a hundred miles on the car. Not an everyday thing, but it happens often enough to watch for. Collection day: what actually happens

Most Teslas aren’t delivered to your door. You collect from a delivery centre, and it might not be the one nearest you. Coming from South Wales, mine was Bristol docks. Worth sorting out before the day, because getting there is a round trip in someone else’s car.

The handover itself is much quicker than you’d expect. There’s no ceremony and no walk-round. They check your ID, activate the car, hand you the key cards and point you at it. You can be driving away within minutes.

So check the car over properly before you leave. Paint, panel gaps, marks, the interior, that everything works. Nobody’s going to walk you round and point things out, so if you don’t look, nobody does.

This matters most for cosmetic stuff. The rule owners repeat is that paint defects, scratches and chips need reporting within about 100 miles or 7 days, whichever comes first. After that it gets much harder to argue the damage was there at handover. I couldn’t find it formally published anywhere, so treat it as a practical deadline rather than a policy. Either way, look before you drive off.

Mechanical faults aren’t on that clock. Mine was a whistle from one of the wing mirrors, which I only noticed once I was home and up to speed. I booked Tesla mobile service and they came out to the house and sorted it within a few days. No dealer, no courtesy car, no day off work. Servicing was the thing I was most sceptical about before buying, and it’s given me the least trouble of anything.

The car turns up with around 20% charge, which catches people out. Tesla credits 100 miles of free Supercharging so you can top up nearby before heading home. You do have to actually go and do it, though, rather than setting off on 20%.

If you’re collecting from Bristol, skip Gordano services. It’s the obvious first stop, which is the problem. Everyone else collecting that day has the same idea, so it gets busy around collection times. Carry on to Cribbs Causeway instead. Two charging locations, and a much less stressful first charge than queueing at a motorway services in your first hour with the car.

You have to relearn how to fuel a car

The habit that took longest to break was wanting to fill it up. With petrol you run it down and brim it. With an EV you top up little and often, mostly while you’re asleep or doing something else. I still catch myself thinking in full tanks.

Superchargers were the other surprise. They’re quick. A short stop puts back far more than I expected, which is what makes topping up feel normal rather than like a compromise.

One setting I would leave alone

There’s a setting that unlocks only the driver’s door when you walk up to the car. Sounds sensible. I turned it on early and regretted it. Every time someone else needed to get in, or I had shopping to load, it was an extra step to get at the boot or the passenger doors.

Unless you actually need it, leave it off. It’s a thirty-second change either way, but it’s the sort of thing you switch on in the excitable first week and then quietly resent for a fortnight.

How to use it

1. Click the referral link before you start configuring your car.
2. Build and order your Model 3 or Model Y as normal.
3. Look for the confirmation. Tesla pops up a box headed “[name]’s Referral Applied” with a green tick, listing what you get, and the configurator then shows a small “✓ Referral Applied” marker as you build the car. If you can’t see either, it hasn’t attached, and it can’t reliably be added once you’ve paid.
4. Take delivery. The Supercharging credit appears in the Tesla app.
